Work starts on new Bank Tube station upgrade

Date: 21/6/2013
Work is now underway on a new entrance at Bank station on the London Underground, as part of measures designed to cope with rising passenger congestion. The new entrance, which will include a new ticket hall, escalators and lifts, is due to open towards the end of 2015, said Transport for London (TfL).
David Waboso, London Underground's Director of Capital Programmes, said: "Bank is one of the busiest stations on the network and we've been working closely with the City of London Corporation on plans to create more capacity at this important interchange.
"The Walbrook new entrance is the first key step in implementing these plans."
Plans for more comprehensive upgrades to the station, which has seen 40 per cent growth in the number of passenger interchanges in recent years, are being finalised, according to the organisation.
However, it warned that these plans are dependent on continued government funding for TfL's investment programme - to be announced by Chancellor George Osborne in next week's Spending Round.
