Workington station adds new shuttle service

Date: 30/11/2009

Northern and Network Rail are running a new shuttle service between Workington and its new Workington North station.

The government-funded shuttle train runs in addition to regular service for the Cumbrian coast lines and is intended to improve links in the aftermath of flooding in the area which closed several road links.

Workington North was assembled in six days and was opened at 5:50 on Monday as a makeshift station constructed of scaffolding and planks.

The rail bridge is the only fixed river crossing in the area for 17 miles after the A597 Northside bridge and a footbridge in Workington collapsed when the Derwent flooded on November 20.

A gravel-surfaced car park and a waiting shelter were also constructed for the Workington North station
