York Council could consider subsidised travel for young jobseekers

Date: 27/3/2013
Transport authorities in York could be set to consider the prospect of providing young jobseekers with subsidised travel in a bid to combat youth unemployment in the city.As the York Press reports, a task group set up by the City of York Council was designed to discover the main barriers standing in the way of young people finding work.
And with transport highlighted as one of the key issues, the body recommended that the local authority should explore the potential of subsidised travel to support youngsters getting to jobs outside of the city centre.
With public transport improvements and bike and car-share schemes suggested as possible solutions, the emphasis is on supporting young jobseekers through providing more appropriate travel options.
"[Youth unemployment] is still a very important issue and we have to help young people who have never been in work, because otherwise they will struggle," said task group member Councillor Anna Semlyen.
