York station engineering work eases bottleneck

Date: 5/1/2012
Engineering work that took place at the south end of York station over Christmas has eased congestion for services on the east coast main line.New track and signalling systems were brought online and the changes mean trains travelling from Leeds to the north-east and Scotland no longer have to stand before they can access a platform.
Work to install a new junction and additional line began in 2011 but the signalling changes were delayed until Christmas when no trains ran due to the extent of the process.
Network Rail's Route Managing Director for London North Eastern Phil Verster said the improvements will result in "real benefits" to passengers.
"At a basic level it will mean less time spent waiting on board a train to get a platform outside York station," he stated, adding faster services will be introduced by April 2014.
York is not the only transport hub to receive an upgrade, as new entrances are to be created on Tooley Street and St Thomas Street to improve access to London Bridge station.
