Yorkshire set to witness £1.4bn 'transport revolution'

Date: 15/4/2013
West Yorkshire and York is set to benefit from a £1.4 billion investment package designed to overhaul the region's transport infrastructure, the Yorkshire Evening Post reports.Council leaders have given the green light to more than 30 projects across the area, with station and city centre improvements planned alongside new link roads, bypasses and carriageways around Leeds.
With the various schemes expected to create 20,000 fresh jobs and support expanding firms, Bradford Council leader David Green hailed the economic impact that the initiative is expected to have.
"An immediate priority for economic recovery and growth is reducing congestion and overcrowding on the transport network," he said.
"Better transport links mean more investment in the area and more jobs."
West Yorkshire's five Councils will join forces with York to create a shared fund to support the initiatives, which outline transport policy in the region for the next ten years.
It is estimated that a quarter of the money needed to support the project will be provided by the Government.
