Yorkshire town to get £27m transport network

Date: 15/1/2013
A £27 million transport plan is due to be unveiled for the town of Beverley in East Yorkshire, which is aimed at cutting congestion and boosting business.Among the schemes which are to be outlined in the proposals are the Beverley southern relief road, changes to Grovehill junction, Swinemoor roundabout and the level crossing at Flemingate.
East Riding Council is holding a public exhibition today (January 15th) at the Treasure House in Beverley between 10am and 7.30pm, so that local people can see what the changes will involve.
Councillor Stephen Parnaby, Leader of East Riding Council, said: "The public exhibition provides an excellent opportunity for residents to look at the plans for this important infrastructure scheme and ask any questions they may have."
He went on to say that although there will be a certain amount of disruption in the short-term, the long-term benefits will outweigh the inconvenience caused.
Mr Parnaby gave the example of the A164 Humber Bridge to Beverley Route Improvement Scheme, which was started last year, to show how such works have the potential to enhance travel for local residents.
He added: "The Beverley Integrated Transport Plan will provide immediate benefits by allowing businesses to share in its delivery, providing a boost for the economy by safeguarding jobs in the construction industry and its supply chain."
A full approval bid is to be submitted to the (DfT) Department for Transport in February, allowing for work to start on the road infrastructure project in the summer of 2015.
Should all of those stages be completed then the timetable will see the Beverley Integrated Transport Plan begin as soon as the £10 million A164 scheme has been completed.
Work is continuing on the A164 in the areas of drainage, excavation, stoning, kerbing and surfacing the road, with much of the job being carried out at night to minimise disruption.
One lane of traffic is also being maintained in each direction throughout the works, so that the route can remain open for road users.
