Young drivers warned of consequences of speeding

Date: 30/6/2010
Motorists under the age of 25 have been reminded of the dangers of driving at speed. The warning came from Brake and FedEx Express after the organisations released research concerning speeding among young drivers.
Brake Campaigns Officer Ellen Booth explained young people "often feel invincible and over-estimate their power to get out of trouble".
More than half of young drivers were found to have travelled in a car that broke 70mph on a country road or 40mph in a 30mph zone.
Furthermore, 23 per cent admitted to having been in a race while on a public road.
The organisations reminded consumers that car crashes are the greatest cause of death among those aged 15 to 24 and that younger drivers are more likely to be killed on the road than any other age group.
Brake recently called for councils to take part in Road Safety Week and urged people to stick to 20mph limits when they apply.
