Young or male drivers 'most likely to speed'

Young or male drivers 'most likely to speed'

Date: 30/5/2012

Young and male drivers are the most likely to speed, new research has revealed.

A study conducted by Brake and Direct Line discovered 46 per cent of male motorists travel at more than 35mph in a 30mph zone on a weekly basis.

This figure dropped to 27 per cent among female drivers.

Similarly, 52 per cent of young drivers speed at least weekly, compared with 34 per cent of older road users.

The two organisations are urging people to slow down - especially in residential and built-up areas - and consider travelling at 20mph near schools, houses and shops.

"We're appealing to government to invest in more 20mph limits, appealing to local authorities everywhere to implement these life-saving and life-enabling schemes as widely as possible," said Brake Senior Campaigns Officer Ellen Booth.

Some local councils already have 20mph limits in place near schools if they think there is particular need after considering things such as accident rates, how it could help the environment and implementation costs.
