TRL’s Driving Simulator Centre launches new portable simulator MiniDigiSim

TRL’s DigiSim, the UK’s leading driving simulation centre has now recently completed development of MiniDigiSim.

MiniDigiSim offers the same technical capabilities as TRL’s renowned DigiCar driving simulator, but is entirely portable only requiring a table, chair and standard power source to be fully operational.  It can be fully assembled in less than thirty minutes.

Capable of being configured as a car, truck or bus, it operates using the same detailed 3-D environments, sophisticated driving scenarios and high frequency, fine grained data recording capability accuracy as the DigiCar simulator.

MiniDigiSim provides total flexibility in the kind of research and training it can undertake, taking realistic simulation to the driving audience, rather than drivers travelling to TRL.

And already it has been deployed: examining truck driver behaviour on the approach to the Dartford Tunnel; at a road safety seminar and at Transport for London’s headquarters to allow staff to experience the Dutch Style Roundabout that TRL is currently trialling on their behalf.

Dr Nick Reed, Principal Human Factors Researcher said: “MiniDigiSim is a really useful and practical addition to our suite of simulation capabilities.  Whilst it lacks the full enclosure of a real car cabin and motion cueing system that enhances the experience provided by DigiCar, MiniDigiSim enhances TRL’s suite of simulator facilities with a different set of capabilities:  increased configurability and the convenience of being transportable to external sites when required.

“This allows us to engage more freely with our customers, for example, offering unique driving experiences on site. MiniDigiSim also strengthens possibilities for TRL to develop cost effective partnerships with organisations and universities for collaborative research into driver behaviour.”
