Helmet Loss Survey - Initial Findings

Date: 12/3/2013

TRL is conducting a self-funded research project to try to determine what factors are taken into account by riders when purchasing a new helmet, and have an active survey currently in operation.

This survey is part of a wider study into the factors that may cause helmet loss in collisions, leaving the rider without this essential form of protection. Both current and historic accident data suggests that this may occur in about 10% of collisions, and whilst some of this is due to riders failing to fasten their helmets correctly, there are clearly documented cases of fastened helmets coming loose.

Initial findings from the survey responses so far indicate:

  • Only about 40% of riders have their heads measured at the time of sale, and that some riders have bought helmets that they can pull off, even though they appeared to be a correct fit. This suggests a serious failure at the point of sale, and a lack of understanding by both the sales staff and the purchasers
  • 30% of users have had issues with helmet fit, often because a particular brand or range is the wrong internal shape
  • About 15% of helmets are reported to be purchased through the internet, producing an enhanced potential for the purchase of a helmet that is the wrong shape or size
  • The majority of riders have the chin straps slightly loose, and can pass either one or 2 fingers beneath the chinstrap and their chins

The results of the helmet physical testing and the survey will be freely available from TRL later in the year. In the meantime, all motorcyclists are encouraged to contribute to the survey to increase the size and confidence in the survey data.
