TRL Driving Simulator assists the Highways Agency in their research

Date: 20/6/2013
As part of the Highways Agency’s plan to implement all-lane running on some sections of its network, TRL has been undertaking research in DigiCar, our full mission driving simulator. The evidence it has provided has helped to increase assurance of the management motorways all-lane running concept and to test optimum design configurations.
The trials involving selected members of the public, tested driver behaviour and understanding of the new concept. Participants were representative of the UK driving population and had no previous experience of driving on managed motorways.
The research showed that a managed motorway all-lane running layout could maintain the controlled environment demonstrated by the existing dynamic managed motorway schemes. Visibility trials also showed that an MS4 sign provides all the necessary optical performance for providing driver information in a managed motorways environment.
Recently, members of the media as well as interested stakeholder groups were invited to TRL to experience all-lane running for themselves.
