This report is intended to encourage the use of soil nailing where technical or economic benefits would result. Soil nails may be used for the construction of new walls or the strengthening of existing ones, but the lack of a definitive, published design method may be inhibiting their use. The report describes and discusses two highway schemes where soil nails were used. It also attempts to draw together the relevant parts of various British Standards, DETR (Department of the Environment, Transport and the Regions) documents and other publications. Where clear guidance is not available discussion and advice is provided which should be of value to prospective designers and clients. (A)
