Vehicle Safety

Our expert research covers how vehicles react during an impact with other vehicles or objects at varying speeds, conditions and locations including frontal, side, pole and rear impacts.

Vehicle Safety

TRL supports the Decade of Action for Road Safety 2011-2020Our research has led to the design of safer vehicles which absorb energy, keep the occupant compartments intact and ensure deceleration levels are tolerable for drivers and passengers. We've been instrumental in the development of standards and regulations including programmes such as Euro NCAP and we also work with manufacturers on design guidelines.

Euro NCAP provides consumers with an independent assessment of the safety performance of cars sold in Europe. Established in 1997 and now backed by five European governments, the European Commission and motoring and consumer organisations in every EU country, Euro NCAP has rapidly become a catalyst for encouraging safety improvements to car design.

TRL can test your vehicles to national standard or put vehicles through extreme conditions, depending on your requirements. We're able to offer a flexible, tailored package designed around your bespoke needs. We test vehicles, interpret the results and provide feedback on how your vehicle performs. We also offer recommendations on how vehicles' structure and design can be improved.

TRL has over 40 years experience in the design and testing of vehicle restraint systems (safety barriers) and played a major part in the original design and deployment of vehicle restraint systems on British roads in the 1960s and 1970s. Today, whilst maintaining this work, TRL actively participates in associated areas of research and development at national, European and international level. This has been through effective joint-working on projects such as the European Commission-funded ROBUST project and close working with the Highways Agency, leading UK consultants, motoring organisations, manufacturers and police authorities to ensure best practice in vehicle restraint systems both in the UK and overseas.

TRL's state-of-the-art on-site facilities include impact test facilities and put us in a prime position to manage this work in a controlled and safe environment. We're able to complete standard tests for all vehicles and vehicle restraint systems and bespoke specialist testing. We have a vast array of technical knowledge and know-how derived from decades of partnering with the UK government on standards development and with industry on best practice.
