Infrastructure Asset Management

Our road and rail customers are grappling with ageing infrastructure, increasing levels of traffic, changing levels of budget and ever increasing volumes of asset data. We help you collect, collate and manage asset information effectively so you can maintain safety and performance standards, keep track of inventories, better understand the impact of maintenance policy options, undertake asset valuation and minimise risk.

TRL has more than 40 years’ experience and expertise helping safeguard and control substantial asset inventories for public sector and commercial transport customers. We understand how your systems have evolved, how to use asset data to inform network management decisions and the challenges of providing one version of the truth.

TRL has proven capability to repeatedly create solutions in challenging new areas. Our multi disciplinary teams carry out technically demanding work that delivers practical tools and measurable benefits for our customers.

Local, national and international capability

Our asset and infrastructure management capabilities include specification, data collection, asset management software, implementation, maintenance strategy, quality assurance, audit and training. Working with customers all over the world, we have wide experience of measuring asset performance in various climatic zones and use of marginal materials.

We helped develop the World Bank HDM-4 model for highways. We regularly input data into it and have trained users in many countries to make best use of the analysis capabilities of the tool.

Meeting real-world commercial needs

Our customers’ asset data is often imperfect – in this area we are rarely starting from scratch. We are experienced at integrating and optimising data from disparate and legacy management systems.

Our pragmatic and commercially focused approach means we can help you maintain existing assets of varying ages and condition within available budgets.

We work with you to understand your particular business challenges and recommend and develop solutions to match. TRL’s customers value our appreciation of the need to manage stakeholder expectations at times. For example, for low probability, high impact events like severe weather, when there is not sufficient justification for preventative capital investment.

Exploiting innovative technology to tackle unique challenges

At TRL we have an excellent reputation for innovation in asset management – we build reference devices against which other equipment is assessed. We also design and sell asset assessment technology and specialist and routine survey tools. For example, our pioneering Marking Collector assesses road marking integrity and reflectivity. We develop brand new solutions to improve responsiveness and efficiency, such as using remote sensing data to assess road condition and developing toolsets such as the Highways Maintenance Assessment Tool (HMAT) to assess the wider economic benefits of road maintenance.

Our expertise is acknowledged throughout the transport industry: we offer technical leadership in industry groups such as the UK RCMG (Roads Condition Monitoring Group).

World-class tools, facilities and methodologies

Our proprietary asset management software iROADS is in use around the world. We constantly update and enhance its capabilities to meet the changing needs of our customers. We operate a pavement test facility - the only full scale accelerated testing facility in the UK. As a result of research using it, tens of millions of pounds have been saved in the UK through a reduction in maintenance activities. This work also has a positive environmental impact in reducing CO2 output.

Road marking collector

A new and innovative approach to measuring the visibility and completeness of longitudinal, transverse and in-lane road markings under all lighting conditions at traffic speed. The Marking Collector uses state of the art LED imaging equipment mounted on the front of a survey vehicle to collect high resolution images of road markings at traffic-speed. It adopts a novel configuration to overcome many of the practical and technological limitations encountered with previous generations of road marking assessment devices.
