Sustainable Transport

We're at the forefront of new and innovative approaches to developing sustainable transport solutions that reduce dependency on the car and encourage people to travel by sustainable transport modes. These range from the provision of effective and integrated public transport options to specific schemes designed to encourage a switch in transport modes.

In the UK, we've worked for Transport for London, the Department for Transport and the Highways Agency on projects to improve the street environment for vulnerable road users and to evaluate the impact of 'smarter travel' on travel behaviour and congestion. We've conducted significant research on why and how people travel, so as to better understand the barriers to travel choice. Our team includes staff who have worked on sustainable travel programmes for both local and national government and who have contributed to national guidance in this area.

At an international level, TRL is working with a network of institutions worldwide to develop scenarios, strategies and pathways towards a low-carbon transport system. Our staff are at the forefront of new research which explores behavioural and technological possibilities for addressing transport emissions.
