Privacy Notice - Welsh Gov Zebra Project


The Transport Research Laboratory Ltd (TRL) is committed to protecting your information. This Notice has been created to help answer questions you may have about how we protect and use the information we gather. Strategic Research and Insight Ltd (SRI) will be the sub-processor of the personal data you provide to us (on behalf of the Data Processor – TRL, and the Data Controller – Welsh Government (WG))

What is the purpose and legal basis of the processing?

Under privacy and data protection legislation all processing of personal data must have an appropriate legal basis. The legal basis for processing your personal data for Welsh Government Zebra Crossing is consent, legitamate interest, and performance of a contract in order to in order to allow participants to enter a prize draw, and to pay participants for their involvement. Your name and contact details will not be shared with TRL or WG.

As part of this trial we will collect personal information about you relating to disability that affects your mobility (such information is known as ‘special category’ data) (Please note that the result of all trial data is anonymised). This information will be shared with TRL.

We will only collect, store or use ‘special category’ data if:

  • We have your explicit consent to do so;
  • You have previously made that data public knowledge; or
  • We need to use that data to establish, exercise or defend legal claims.

When we collect or receive special category data we will seek your explicit consent to do so.

If we have asked for your consent to use your personal information for the purposes of the project you can withdraw this at any time; you should have already been told how to do this but if not, or if you are in doubt, please use the contact details below. Please note that your consent to use your personal information is separate from your ethical consent to participate in a particular research study (which we usually request for relevant types of research).

Our legitimate Interest to process your data in order to ensure a good spread of people are taking part in the research and to supplement researchers’ notes for analysis. We may process your personal data in this way where your interests and fundamental rights do not override our legitimate business interests.

Information we Collect

The Information and Consent section on the survey explains the personal data/information collected as part of the Project and the processing to be carried out.

How long we store data

The data will be stored only for as long as it is relevant to the purposes above. Your Personal Data will be held by SRI and TRL for 3 months after the project has ended for the following purpose: compare and report behaviour across the sample and then archived, deleted, anonymised. Your responses will be anonymised for analysis before your personal data will be be archived and deleted. If at any stage of the study, you choose to opt out of participating, your personal data will be held for 3 months following that data collection point before being deleted. The project is expected to complete in February 2023.

Who we share your Personal Data with

TRL will have access to all data (except name and contact details) collected in this survey as the data is being shared by SRI to TRL. All data shared with TRL will be anonymised and the responses will be summarised into a report for WG. We will not share the data with any other third parties, including the data controller WG. We may need to disclose information to third parties if we are under a duty to disclose or share your personal data in order to comply with any auditing and corporate governance functions or legal obligation.

Where we store personal data

Personal Data you provide to us is stored on our secure servers in the United Kingdom. Your Personal Data will not be transferred out of the UK. Any change to that storage will be communicated to you.

How we keep your Personal Data secure

We have implemented administrative, technical, and physical security measures to help prevent unauthorised access to your information. Once we have received your information, we will use strict procedures and security features to try to prevent unauthorised access. We restrict access to information to only those employees, who need such access in order to operate, develop, improve, or deliver our programs, products, and services.

Automated Decision Making

We do not undertake any automated decision-making or profiling activities as part of the project.
